“and they went out, and preached that men should repent.”
All too often, repent or repent and believe has lost its message and has been replaced with “believe” or even “ask Jesus into your heart.”
This seems like a minor point, but the concept of repentance continues to get dropped out of the message. And it’s a critical component of salvation.
And why not, repentance confronts the fact that we are sinners who are lost and dead in our trespasses. It’s hard – as many would say, it’s offensive.
If we choose God, as too many believe, (vs. God choosing us), it is more palatable to drop the repentance and just concentrate on the belief or faith aspects.
But, salvation is not by the will of man but by the will of God.
And true salvation requires repentance and faith. We need to remember this when we share our faith.
We can’t worry about making it offensive. In fact, if it’s not offensive, it’s not the true gospel.
Those chosen will come to salvation through the power of the word and the Holy Spirit. Neither needs our paltry efforts to grease the skids.
Thank you, Lord, for the truth of your word.
