Why read the Bible? – 1 Tim 6:5

1 Tim 6:5 “…depraved mind and deprived of the truth…”

2 Tim 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable…

2 Tim 2:24-25 “…be kind to all…with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may give them repentance leading to the full knowledge of the truth…”

A Most Peculiar Book “For two and a half centuries academic critics have purported to explain how biblical texts came about and therefore what “message” they conveyed. Since those texts couldn’t possibly be what they claimed to be—histories of ancient Jewish monarchs, revelations of God’s character, eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ miracles—modern critics set about explaining what they were…The one thing Bible scholars “know” about the miracles of Jesus, for example, is that the documents reporting them were concocted by local religious communities decades after Jesus’ death…The Hebrew and Christian scriptures, in this view, are a collection of baffling rigmarole and wild fabrications, and their texts are nothing remotely close to what they profess to be. Traditional religious belief, unsurprisingly, is declining precipitously in the West. Most educated Westerners would rather create their own myths, or avoid questions of meaning altogether, than drag themselves to churches and synagogues to hear stories their college professors told them were preposterous inventions. Who can blame them?

This young man, married with two daughters, an author and former speechwriter for the Republican Governor of South Carolina, is obviously no friend of the Bible.

But, I have a few questions:

  • Does it surprise you that the author is apparently Republican? Do we too closely associate Conservatives with Christian?
  • The author did not vacillate – he trashed the entire Bible. Are Christians that have a position that although the Bible is God-breathed, certain portions may be discarded any better for their stance? For example; creation in 7 days, Jonah in the belly of the Whale, the Walls of Jericho, or doctrines which we find offensive, etc.
  • How bold should we be in proclaiming the truth of the Bible?
  • How should he be approached?

Lord reveal the truth to this young man and reveal the truth of the whole bible as “God-breathed and profitable” to all believers.

I praise and thank you, Lord.
