What is Revealed in the Book of Revelation?

The Revelation of Jesus Christ” is probably the least-read book in the New Testament. So neglected in fact that in verse 1:3 God tries to motivate with a “blessing” for “he who reads…who hears…and keeps the things that are written in it…” In other words, he who reads and listens and then responds in obedience to the Book of Revelation will be blessed. No other book makes such an offer.

The primary purpose of the Book of Revelation is clear however, it is to reveal all about the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. In fact Revelation 1:1 states “the Revelation (or revealing) of Jesus Christ…which must soon happen…

Revelation 1:3 concludes “for the time is near.”

What is it that is “near?”

In verse 1:1 we have our answer – “the Revelation (or revealing) of Jesus Christ…which must soon happen…

The First Coming of Jesus Christ

Christ has already been historically revealed. He came to earth as a baby, lain in a manger, fully God and fully man – we celebrate this as Christmas. He was crucified, died, rose to life, and ascended again to Heaven – this we celebrate as Easter.

We know well these stories – they’re historical. This is the first coming of Jesus Christ – in humility.

In Revelation, the things which must soon happen, pertain to Christ’s second coming – this time in glory, Christ takes back the earth from Satan and establishes His kingdom.

The World Mocks Christ’s Second Coming

We know this less well. In fact, it is commonly mocked and ignored.

2 Peter 3:3-4 “In the last day’s mockers will come with their mocking…saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming…all continues just as it was from the beginning…'”

Matthew 24:36-39 “But of that day and hour no one knows,…but the Father alone. For just as the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be…and they did not understand…so will the coming of the Son of Man be.”

Revelation is Written to Seven Actual Churches and Seven Typical Churches from the Trinity

In vs 4, it starts, “john to the seven churches in Asia (modern-day Turkey).”

Then the “from” – “the One who is, was and is to come” the timeless Father. From “the seven spirits who are before His throne – the Holy Spirit, and…” from Jesus Christ.” This is the Trinity.

So this book is written through John, initially to the seven churches and from the Trinity.

In vs 7, the second coming is described “Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes on earth will mourn over Him…”

The Messages to the Seven Churches

In verse 9, John, who shares characteristics with other believers – a partaker, in tribulation (persecution), with a kingdom inheritance, in perseverance, is on the Island of Patmos, a Roman Penal Colony, on “the day of the Lord” or Sunday, “in the Spirit and he hears…” John is mysteriously transported to the future where he talks with Jesus and with Angels and witnesses the sequence of events detailed above.

In verse 11, “write” and “send” this to the seven churches in modern-day Turkey – “Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.” Not only were these actual churches, but they are typical of churches throughout time.

In vs 12-16 John describes what Christ looks like in Heaven. This is a first-century man describing Christ in heaven – so it’s not without difficulties.

In 17 – 19, John falls “like a dead man” and Christ Himself comforts him – I am…”write the things which you have seen, which are and which will take place.” He then explains the Seven Stars are the Angels or Messengers of the Seven Churches and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

What is the Sequence of the Church Age

Let’s first step back and detail the chronology of the end times in order to understand His second coming. Here are the next events on God’s calendar:

  • the Rapture – where the church will be “caught up” into Heaven to be with Jesus – 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17,
  • the 7 year Tribulation – where God will judge Satan and non-believers. Mark 13:19-20 “For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred since the beginning of the creation…and unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days.”
  • the Second ComingMatthew 24:29-21 immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.  And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet blast, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.”Revelation 19:11-15 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He judges and wages war.  His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns, and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.  He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.  And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.  From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will [rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the winepress of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.”
  • the 1,000 year Millenium – Rev 20:1-6 “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key of the abyss…and he laid hold of the dragon…who is the devil…and bound him for a thousand years; Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection. Over those, the second death has no authority, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.”
  • the New Heavens and New Earth – 2 Peter 3:13 “But according to His promise we are looking for New Heavens and a New Earth, in which righteousness dwells.” Revelation 21:1 “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.”

A Summary of Revelation Chapter 1

The future of Jesus Chris, beyond His first coming, is revealed in the Book of the Revelation – this is His Second Coming.

There is even a blessing to read, understand and obey the Book of the Revelation.

Through John and initially to the seven churches, then and now, the Book of the Revelation is from the Trinity.

John, the beloved apostle, the only one not to die as a martyr, is transported to heaven in the future, speaks to Jesus, angels, and elders, and is instructed to write the Book of Revelation.

In the Second Coming, Christ punishes rejectors, takes back the earth from Satan, and establishes His kingdom forever.

Although all living believers will be raptured prior to the tribulation, there will be a great revival during the Tribulation, due to the 2 witnesses and the 144,000 Jewish evangelists –  many will be martyrs. Those surviving will populate the Millenium kingdom.
